Symptoms
When you enter a license key in the VisualSVN Server Manager, you may get the following error:
The entered license key is invalid
Please ensure that you are entering the correct license key for VisualSVN Server and that you have copied its whole body.
Cause 1: the entered text is not a VisualSVN Server license key
The entered text is not a license key, or not the complete license key.
Resolution
A licence key for VisualSVN Server has the following format:
Make sure that you copy and paste the entire key, which includes everything between the dashed lines (the dashed lines themselves are optional).
The license key is sent to the email address provided during the purchase. Typically, you can find it by searching for the term VisualSVN Server in that email inbox. If you can't find it, contact us at sales@visualsvn.com.
Cause 2: you entered a license key for a different product
Our company currently offers the following products:
- VisualSVN Server - a server for hosting SVN repositories;
- VisualSVN for Visual Studio - a plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio, for interacting with SVN repositories.
Although the license keys for these products look similar, they are not interchangeable between the products.
Resolution
Make sure that you enter the license key specifically for VisualSVN Server, not for the VisualSVN plug-in for Visual Studio. The product is mentioned in the email with the key.
Cause 3: you entered an Enterprise Multinode license key into VisualSVN Server 4.0.x or earlier
The Enterprise Multinode license is supported only by VisualSVN Server 4.1.x and later.
Resolution
Upgrade VisualSVN Server to the latest version. Please see the corresponding article on upgrading, such as KB233: Upgrading to VisualSVN Server 5.4 (for 5.4.x) or a later one.
Cause 4: you entered a temporary license key from a Purchase Order into VisualSVN Server 4.3.x or earlier
The temporary license key for a Purchase Order is supported only by VisualSVN Server 4.4.x and later.
This kind of a temporary license key is emailed to you, if you had chosen Purchase Order as the payment method during the online checkout (or possibly when buying a license from a third-party reseller). This kind of license key allows you to start using VisualSVN Server immediately, before the Purchase Order gets paid.
Resolution
Upgrade VisualSVN Server to the latest version. Please see the corresponding article on upgrading, such as KB233: Upgrading to VisualSVN Server 5.4 (for 5.4.x) or a later one.
Then you can enter this kind of temporary key immediately. Before the temporary key expires, you should replace it with the regular (permanent) license key, which you will receive once the Purchase Order gets paid.
